The headline in The Standard-Times says it all, "Nine Candidates to Run for Mayor." I am one of those nine. The question is, how do I distinguish myself from the other eight candidates in a way that convinces the voters that I am the most qualified and experienced person to lead New Bedford at this time.

During the Mayor’s term in office, the Mayor has closed two police stations and relocated the downtown main police station to a former grocery store. Crime is rampant in the City. The Mayor’s plan to stem crime has been a complete failure. Again, crime is up dramatically for the first seven months of this year.
NEW BEDFORD -- Scott W. Lang, candidate for mayor, is calling on the mayor to stop "playing pre-election political games" with the construction of a new public safety building.
As I have traveled throughout the neighborhoods of New Bedford, I have become more and more convinced that the number one issue facing our City, and on the minds of the voters is the sense of lawlessness that exists in the neighborhoods and the soaring crime rate that our citizens are subject to.

New Bedford Firefighters Endorse Scott Lang for Mayor

This article appeard Friday, Septmeber 9, 2005 on the Greater Southeastern Massachusetts Labor Council

The New Bedford Fire Fighters Association, Local 841, IAFF has endorsed Scott W.Lang for Mayor of New Bedford. The vote was taken after members met separately with 4 of the candidates for Mayor.

Scott is the former attorney of the Local and has been considered a good friend for many years, however it was Scott's presentation and answers to our members questions that convinced us we should give our endorsement. As an attorney Scott Lang has represented both sides of the bargaining table but his passion is representing unions and working people.

Most importantly, Scott Lang really CARES about people and the kind of City in which we want to live.

Fraternally,

Jim Allen
President
Local 841

"I wouldn't be in this race if I didn't want to win it," he said while campaigning last week. Mr. Lang said he waited and watched the other candidates over the summer, hoping they would provide a serious challenge to the mayor.  When he became convinced they would not, he took out his nomination papers, about two weeks before the filing deadline.

Spaghetti Supper Fundraiser

There will be a spaghetti supper fundraiser on September 14, at the 6th Bristol Club, 736 Ashley Boulevard in New Bedford.

The supper will be from 4:30 pm. to 7:00 p.m.

The cost is $5 per person. Children 12 years old and younger eat for free.

The city has very serious problems - a violent crime epidemic, streets in disrepair, blighted neighborhoods, an unacceptable dropout rate and taxes that go up while services decline. Even more troubling, the mayor has created collective bargaining chaos.
NEW BEDFORD -- Scott Lang, a candidate for mayor, is criticizing Mayor Frederick M. Kalisz Jr. for allowing the pilings and fender system along the South Terminal waterfront to deteriorate.
