The State of the City address given by Mayor Scott W. Lang on March 2nd, 2006.
The State of the City Address given by Mayor Scott W. Lang on March 1st, 2007 in New Bedford, Massachusetts.
It has been 139 years since General Order Number 11 was promulgated designating May 30, 1868 as a day for “the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet church-yard in the land.  In this observance, no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way, arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.”  General Order No. 11, Issued by General John Logan, Commander-in-Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic.
The murder of Bernadette DePina caused the people of New Bedford to take a very long, unvarnished look at the City, its values, and its sense of community.  We saw raw anguish, but we also realized that Mrs. DePina’s death could be a turning point for New Bedford and its citizens.

Scott pledges to run an honest, positive, powerful issue-oriented campaign.

Dr. King exemplified the ideals of sacrifice and commitment for the betterment of our fellow man. He led this country through a great social movement, the Civil Rights Movement, to a society that has finally begun to recognize all individuals as equals under the law, and in their communities. I know there is still, each day, tremendous work to be done in the area of social and economic justice for all, and that Dr. King’s dream of America, where “one day little black boys and little black girls, will be able to join hands with little white boys and little white girls as sisters and brothers” is still evolving at the present time. But on these issues and this cause, we are moving forward, and, in this City, we are moving forward with great conviction.

Scott Lang took to the stage for his acceptance speech as a jubilant crowd cheered him on following the pummeling he gave Mayor Frederick M. Kalisz Jr. wracking up 15,673 to the mayor's 7,601.

He first spoke about his wife, Gig Lan. "She would go to one neighborhood. I would go to another," he said. "Of the 68 percent vote we got tonight I claim 8 percent Gig can claim 60."

Mr. Lang announced yesterday that instead of naming a traditional transition team and telling the community what it intends to do, he's going to hold a series of three "Big Idea" forums and ask the community what it wants him to concentrate on.

Attorney Scott W. Lang was the overwhelming choice of New Bedford voters today, defeating four-term incumbent Frederick M. Kalisz Jr. by a 2-to-1 ratio. Mayor Kalisz spoke to his campaign workers just before 8:45 p.m.
Nearly three out of every four New Bedford voters sent a stern message in September’s primary election: It is time for a change.

MORE INFORMATION TO COME SOON!

I announced my candidacy for Mayor on August 4th, eight weeks before the primary. Since that time, I have met with thousands of people throughout New Bedford, listening to the problems of the neighborhoods and hearing creative and heart-felt possible solutions to issues that concern the very quality of life of our citizens and their families. These issues are the topics that are discussed at the kitchen tables of every home in the City.

NEW BEDFORD -- Five of the seven mayoral candidates who were eliminated in the Oct. 4 preliminary election publicly endorsed Scott W. Lang yesterday.
